This video clip of Sam Altman is one of the best pieces of leadership advice you’ll hear all year.
In the excitement surrounding AI’s potential and its impact on jobs, too many focus on the technology itself—what it can do and how fast it’s evolving—while underestimating what it takes to integrate it into their organisations.
However, significant change doesn't happen without effective change leadership, and let's face it, the track record of large organisations is dire.
If large organisations see rolling out a new desktop operating system as a significant task—and a new CRM as even more complex—then figuring out how to augment, automate, and reinvent core processes with AI isn’t going to happen overnight.
Of course, new entrants with no baggage can take an AI-first approach and scale quickly, thanks to AI, so incumbents had better watch out.
I believe there are five essential leadership capabilities for the AI era:
1) Adaptive Mindset – staying curious, resilient and flexible amid rapid change
2) Cognitive and Analytical Skills – making sense of complexity with critical thinking and systems thinking
3) Social and Interpersonal Skills – building trust through strong emotional intelligence and communication
4) Ethics, Integrity, and Values – using AI responsibly and transparently
5) Change Leadership – guiding others through uncertainty by experimenting, learning, and adapting fast
